Photography dictionary

When looking for a food photographer, you might come across some terms you are unfamiliar with. Here I am giving you a (non- exhaustive) list of different food photography shot names, with examples. Important to note: These are the definitions I use, there might be small differences between photographers.

Packshot.

A photo of the packaging of a product with very even light. The background is often removed for multi-purpose use.

Styled packshot.

A photo of the packaging of a product, with more context, like what the ingredients are.

 

product photo.

A photo of the product with context, which shows consumers how to product can be used. It is similar to a recipe photo.

 

Editorial photography.

Editorial photography is often referred to when we talk about photos with are used in combination with text, like cookbooks, social media, and magazines. They are about creating a certain atmosphere and inspiring people.

 

commercial photography.

Commercial photographs are used for commercial purposes: ads. These photos really focus on the product itself.
